Someone changed my administrative password, Windows XP

By melissamakfan ·
Dears,
How can I gain administrative rights to my computer again. I run windows XP & someone changed my password. Now I can only work in safe mode to gain access to any of my programs & the internet.Do I have to reformat & start from scratch? Thanks for any help......

Why only Safe mode?

WHat version of XP are you using? Did they delete your previous account and what account are you using to enter Safe mode?
First check the Documents and Settings Folder to see what accounts are currently present. Then see if you can enter the User Accounts area in the Control Panel and try to Create a new User or increase the rights on your old account by adding it to the Administrators Group (Through the user accounts icon, advanced Tab and Advanced Button).

XP 2002

by melissamakfan In reply to Why only Safe mode?

I am running XP media center edition version 2002-service pack 2. They did not delete my previous account they just changed my administrators password. I go into safe mode under HP_administrator. It allows me to get online atleast & use a few of my programs.

use a password reset disk

by ken In reply to XP 2002

Here is a disk I use. The floppy works fine unless you have SCSI then you need to write a CD. The instructions look complicated but just choose the default options and it works
