you want to reload the OS and you have the XP media center edition key, but you only have the XP home CD-ROM media, correct?

The product key affixed to the PC will only work with the PC manufacturer's OEM Windows XP recovery media.

If the code has 'oem' at the beginning, then you will need the CD from Sony (or ebay).

Shouldnt a sony OEM Xp Home disc work and activate though? That is the only OS that sony is showing on their website. Thanks for your help.

In theory, it would be nice, but that particular microsoft key is tied to Windows Media Center Edition. Not necessarly the CD that came with your computer, but the operating system type. IE, you can not use an XP Pro key code to install and activate XP Home...99% of the time, XP home will not even accept the Product Key Code, which is what is on your OEM sticker on the bottom of your laptop. If you have a friend with XP MCE CD's, you can use that sticker on the bottom of your laptop to install it (99.999% of the time). Dell is the only exception to this rule, 99/100 times, it will work, but there are a few systems that won't work with that theory. You can use Microsoft OEM cd's or cd's provided by sony, but if they are from a different manucfacturer, they mostlikely will not work. Hope this clairifies what you are wanting to do. To sum this up, if the sticker reads XP Media Center Edition 2005, that is the only operating system that your sticker is good for.
