simplest way to fix:

get a copy of fedora core 4.
red hat 9 is now 4 years old and no longer supported with bugfixes or security updates.

the hard way:
unpack the tar.bz2 archive
cd to the new directory
then configure with the options to make a module for the kernel
then make
then su to root
then make install
then insmod to add the kernel module to the kernel.
( or run sndconfig as root and test every card it has to find a working driver )
