Did you check in the device manager to see if there are any conflicts with your sound card? Appart from that, perhaps reinstalling the device drivers might help.

I am running 98SE and it does it once in a great while , the only way I have been able to resolve it is to reboot, also do a deep scan for a virus/worm to eleminate that aspect, also the other answer about viewing the control panel for a problem is needed also to resolve that end. I know what causes mine to glitch, it's the sound setup for my CD that causes a problem with the (I wish I had never installed it) media 7 great upgrade . in any case I hope you get some resolution, there is one other thing you can do if you are using a lot of sound files, find a tiny sound file and place it somewhere on the desktop and before you use the large sound files , rt click it , select properties, select preview, this clears the cache . Luck

Was the problem a motherboard with a sound board that needed to be deactivated by jumpers for the card to be active ?
