    Sound on Windows XP Pro

    Locked

    by crutchcrutch ·

I recently installed Windows XP Pro nto a Compaq Presario 2100…..I have downloaded and installed new drivers. When I go to BIOS, there is nothing listed for audio….and there are no explanation points or question marks in the device manager. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Also, when I got control panel – sounds and devices – it shows “no audio device”, and everythng is greyed out…

First, does the machine -have- sound capabilities? Is it on board or a PCI card?
If onboard, is the sound enabled in the BIOS?

Yes the cmoputer does have sound capabilities. I have another OS (Ubuntu) installed on the same computer and sound works fine. When I go to BIOS, there is nowhere to enable sound….

      New drivers?

Did you get them from Compaq or the sound device manufacturer? Did it work before you installed the new drivers? If so, have you tried rolling back to the old drivers?

Look in the BIOS more carefully

Or, get the BIOS manual from the manufacturer and read that; there may be a table of contents you can skim to find the sound configuration menu. I have never heard of any onboard sound hardware which doesn’t have a BIOS setting to switch on/off.
