you can fit a sound card in your rig... lucky duck lol... I'm forced to use the onboard sound card, which isn't that bad, but if it goes out I'm SOL...

i even have a dual slot gfx card and i have free slots on my mobo. i am using onboard audio now but i remember having better sound quality with my old sound card. Im sure the PCI express cards have an even nicer tone to them (thus the price!)

Depends what you want

by JamesRL In reply to $$$soundcards and speaker ...

You know my Soundblaster Live card that I bought for $50 6 years ago still sounds fine.

Personally I use headphones. I game and I find you can hear the fine detail etc. better if you have the separation of the headphones. I bought a pair of Sennheiser - really good brand - for $45 Cdn.

Unless you are running a Dolby 5.1/6.1/7.1 outfit, you don't need to spend a fortune on a good card. Lots of choice at $50.

its a strange thing

by Snuffy09 In reply to Depends what you want

the software for my onboard audio doesnt see my older creative speakers as a 5 piece set (4 speakers and a sub) i can only set it up as 4 speakers or desktop speakers so im getting little to no bass. I was wanting to go all new but after i saw the price tags im back to jerry rigging everything.

Niche Market

by TheChas In reply to $$$soundcards and speaker ...

Good quality sound cards are now a niche and not a mainstream market.

Since nearly every motherboard and OEM system has on-board sound, those of us that want higher quality sound or wish to actually do a decent job of digitizing an analog source have very few options.

In fact, one reason I have not moved my personal desktop systems to Vista (and why I can't transition to Windows 7) is that my trusty Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card is not supported in Vista.

Anyhow, lower market volumes for sound cards takes away the middle level sound cards and leaves just the higher end cards as an option for those who want or need something better than what on-board sound provides.
