Sounds no longer working in Windows 98

By fffoofighters ·
My sounds have recently stopped working on my computer. I'm running windows 98 on an IBM Aptiva. I've run diagnostics programs and it doesn't even show that I have a sound card installed on my computer. I hope someone can help me solve this problem.

Assuming your speakers are correctly connected, go to control Panel, open system then Device manager, check the status of the Sound controller. If there is a yellow alarm on it then chech if there is a Conflict, by viewing the properties and resolving it. If the Alarm is Red, then the interface has been disabled, go to properties and enable it, try resolving any conflict. Also, you can try the BIOS setup, in case your integrated sound controller is disabled. Let me know what happens after.

Good Luck.

Ok try the above should that not work this is some thing else you can try
!!HAVE THE DRIVERS FOR YOU SOUND CARD HANDY"
Go to "Control Panel", open "System" then "Device manager", Remove Sound controller.Close every thing and give the system a restart, when windows it "should" auto detect the card and will try install it,(it will try install the card with its drives or else it will prompt you to insert a driver disk.) Now go back to Device manager and see if the card is there
Y-Test ie play CD or .Wav file
N-see the above post either the cards bust or something is disabled or conflicting
Best Of Luck

DOes anything show up in the device manager at all? Have you made any changes or installed anything recently that amy correlate with your lack of sound? It may be a bad audio chip, or if you recently installed a software modem you may have a conflict as some modems use the same chip as some onboard audio controllers.

If none of the above answers are a solution try opening the mixer control for the sound card or little yellow speaker in the START BAR and make sure volume is turned up or not muted...don't know how many times just turning up the volume on the mixersolved this problem.
