sp 4 will not intall because of mstsc

How do I quit mstsc?

While trying to install sp 4, I get a popup that says "the file program files\terminal services client\mstsc.exe is open or in use by another application" close all other applications and click retry.

Have you tried killing the mstsc.exe process in task manager? Ctrl+shift+esc, click the processes tab, right click mstsc in the list and select End Process.

Are you running a terminal session? mstsc is the client software

Wait, are you connecting to a Windows server via Teminal Services, and installing the Service Pack that way? Because you can't.
That is a big no no.
You can't install a Service Pack on a server from within a Terminal Services session. You need to either distribute the Service Pack using Software Update Services (SUS), Windows Update, logging onto the machine console locally, or deploy it out using Group Policy (I think)!
Personally, I only install Service Packs while I am physically logged into the server itself, standing in front of it, using its keyboard/mouse. No remote control software, no TS.

seems like the installation of the client did not go well.
reboot.
if that doesnt help install the client, if it goes well install sp4 (of course stop relevant services, etc before installing the sp4).
