    SP2 too big

    Locked

    by george ·

    Hi,
I’ve downloaded w2ksp2, a 100 mb exe-file. When I try to run it on a 6-350 system with 128 mb and 40 gig hd, it returns the error message: “program is too big for memory”.
The swapfile (virtual memory) is 190 to 300 mb.
    Any suggestions?
    TIA

      Hey,
I would try to expand the virtual memory to at least 512 and then try again. When runing this compressed update it must make an uncompressed copy of it in dynamic memory. It is temporary, but nessasary.

      To increase your virtual memory…
      1) right click “My Computer”
      2) Select “properties”
      3) Select the “Advanced” tab
      4) Select “performance”
      5) select change the “virtual memory”
      6) set the memory to 384 – 768 (or something of the like)
      7) close all and “reboot”
      8) Try reinstalling the service pack

      ….Good Luck
      -mike

I already did that, no luck. Starting the program on a similar machine with only 300 mb virt. mem did work. Anyway, thanx for your reaction.
        Anything else?

It’s a memory problem, I recently had a simular problem. I went from a machine with 128mb RAM to one that had 256mb RAM to solve my problem.

I had the same problem with smaller exe-files, like 30 Mb. The other machine that did work also had 128 mb. Thanx.

Try using the update pkg from Windows Update.
      http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
This only downloads the files your computer requires. is it to install on PRO or Server

I have also had problems with some installers if their is a space or & or @in the filename – not yet with MS installers so far.

As a last resort could you try downloading the file again perhaps it is corrupt?
