SP6

I have heard many times that SP6 is a complete disaster, but I still see that people are using it. Can someone please give me the truth on this SP. Thank you.

As a rule of thumb, don't fix it if it is not broken. I would only recommend upgrading your service pack if the is a issue you are tring to resolove. (example security issues) You may create other problems for your system if you do the upgrade. Thisis all the info I have.

I'm running SP6, not 6a, with no problems.

The last I knew, 6a was not approved where I work, so...

I have installed the SP6 on my personal machines and installed it on the machines where I used to work for the USAF and had no problems to speak of.

When SP6 first came out it had a number of bugs - hence the release of SP6a. I waited a long time before I finally upgraded to 6a. I'm currently running 6a on approx 7 or 35 servers. I've mostly upgraded to try to fix minor problems with other software running on the servers.

So I agree with the first person - only do the upgrade if necessary. But SP6a is suppose to fix security holes inn the OS - so I guess you need to make the call.. The bottom line is I haven't any problems with SP6a.

The disaster that SP6 caused was the possible breaking of the Notes client. Hence the supplimental SP6a was released (which corrected this breakage). I have deployed alot of NT servers and workstations with SP6a and have not had any problems. Any no machine deployments we do are SP6a, BUT always weigh the Pros and Cons. As the first person said: Don't fix what ain't broke. If you need one of the fixes or want to make sure you have all your security holes covered, apply the SP. Always make a backup to be safe.
