some advanced settings will speed up your computer. clean up all the junk in there that has no use, defrag ur drive, update drivers. newer software requires faster computers, sometimes reverting to supported older versions works well. i'm back to using win95 on my old computer from win98, not recommeded but works well for just an internet PC.

The quickest free way to speed up your computer is to set the swap file to a static size. From the Control Panel, select System, select the Performance tab, then select the Virtual Memory button. Select Let me specify my own settings.) The size of the swap file should be 2 1/2 to 3 times the amount of RAM in your machine. Windows will complain about this change. Just say OK and let it reboot. This is especially helpful if your defragmenter defragments the swap file also.

This change helps because it relieves Windows of managing the size of your swap file. This will especially help if you have 2 hard drives in your system. If so, place the swap file on your non-system drive (usually D). This will equalize the disk IO between thetwo drives.

If you have access to Norton Utilities, Speed Disk will allow you to defragment the files, move the most used files closer to the beginning of the drive, etc. Speed Disk is a good utility to run whether or not you are having speed problems.

Hope this helps.
