BACKGROUND: The “spike” glossary entry lets you copy multiple scraps of text to it. If you need to gather up little bits of text from several non adjacent locations and paste them into one contiguous place in one single action, you use the spike. Ifyou are not familiar with what I am speaking of used the Word online help by searching for occurrences of “spike” or searching for the same on the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
PROBLEM IN DETAIL: if I use the spike with a blank document based on the normal template, there is no problem. However, if I use the spike with any of the number of my “legacy” templates (i.e. templates developed under prior versions of Microsoft Word), as soon as I try to paste from the spike Word will crash. I have taken up this issue with Microsoft support on more than one occasion and I can’t get anyone had Microsoft to admit that basically there is a bug that Microsoft needs to fix. I have e-mailed examples of my legacy templates to Microsoft and they have verified (duplicated) my complaints. Microsoft’s advice was to re-create all of my templates. Obviously there is some sort of corruption in them that has been carried forward with each successive version of Word. Somehow there is a way to identify what the corruption is and to clean it.
