Is there a way to change the background for NT on the screen that comes up before you log on? Thanks,

There are two hidden logo files located in your %systemroot% directory called winnt.bmp and winnt256.bmp. The first file is for a low color display setting and the other is for higher color depths. You can change them to what ever you want.

One option that you could take is to goto the WINNT directory and find the two files WINNT.BMP and WINNT256.BMP these are the two files that are used to display the splash screen found where you logon. Just use a photo editor, Adobe PhotoDeluxe Bus. Ed. works well, you can open the bitmaps, erase, create a new logo perhaps a company logo, etc. Then save the file as winnt.bmp (note this must be an 8bit (16 color bitmap) and then save the same picture as WINNT256.BMP and this file must be a 256color bitmap. Of course you want to backup the old bmp files, do this by changing the extention to .old right after the .bmp Now place the two NEW bmp files that you have just made and there is your new splash background. As for the overall background color, the default is the teal, but I think this is saved in the default users background color preferance. Have fun.

The values for changing this and other logon settings are located in HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop
Here you can change the key for Wallpaper from (Default) to whatever you would like.

The Default value is lanma256.bmp or lanmannt.bmp(depending on your desktop color depth) for NT server and winnt256.bmp or winnt.bmp for workstation
