Split-zone DNS and external Servers

By hanekwj ·
Hello,

I have a split-zone DNS so the FQDN for the AD portion and the Internet portion is identical. We also make use of Office 365 Exchange online.

Ever since we implemented Exchange online we are unable to set up email accounts in outlook unless we first change the preferred DNS server to Google (8.8.8.

I know this happens because the AD DNS server tries to resolve the mail server name/address from it's own records but it does't have entries.

What DNS records should I create that will allow my AD DNS server to resolve to outlook.office365.com when users try to create email accounts for company.com?

Will creating a new third level domain solve this issue without much configuration?

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Regards,
