Splitting a network segment off into a child domain

I have a project that i am undertaking where we may be splitting off approximately half our active directory network into a child domain.

Currently there is a dc out there and the majority of the servers on both sides are windows 2003 servers.

Does anyone have any good resources, documentation, or advice on doing something of this nature?
