Sponsor or Champion role

By Pitje ·
The project is the implementation of a business package.
I am looking for a description of the role and the tasks of the "business sponsor".

Sponsor or Champion role

by RealGem In reply to Sponsor or Champion role

The business sponsor is usually the key project stakeholder. The sponsor must be a senior client manager. Junior managers, or worse, don't cut it because they cannot meet some the requirements below.

Here are the basic responsibilities of the business sponsor:
- represent the business needs to the project. The sponsor is the final say on the business requirements. If someone who is not the sponsor wants to change the requirements, they must get the sponsor to approve.
- represent theproject to the rest of the company. The sponsor is the person that must champion the project. This means that they must communicate the business value and even protect the project, if necessary, from robbery of staff and resources for lower-priority projects.
- secure project resources. This can include funding, staff, workspace, etc. The business sponsor must provide the authority for this.
- resolve issues. The sponsor must be prepared to resolve issues that cannot be resolved at "lower levels". The buck must stop with the sponsor.
- play an active role in the project. This will include regular discussions with the project manager (at minimum), participating in approvals, gates, signoffs, showing the flag (with the team), etc.
