Spooler Service stops without reason

By adembo ·
I have a 2000 Terminal server that is hosting Citrix sessions to anywhere from 10-15 users. Sporadically, the spooler service will stop, and obviously people can't print. I have set the "Recovery" options to restart the service, and even to run a file, which was simply a batch file that would notify me that it was down. When it does go down, none of the recovery steps are used, since it doesnt restart, and I never get a message.

The service is then able to be started manually, without issue.

What may cause this, since this is not a heavily used server, Im troubled by it stopping.

Secondly, what utility or something is out there to monitor and alert if services go down?

We had a similar problem with lexmark printers using the bundled printer management software. When we stopped using that softare and just defininf the tcpip connections from windows the problems stopped.
