Spooler service terminates

By bscott ·
I have some NT Workstations (SP4) that 1 or 2 times a week the spooler service stops running. The user calls me telling me they lost all their printers, I remotely restart their spooler service and everything is ok, until next time. Why is this?

Spooler service terminates

I had this same problem a while ago where my NT4.0 server spooler would just shut down on its own. The culprit turned out to be a printing software solution that we were using to print to our copy machines. Once I removed this software, my spoolerhad no more problems. I'm willing to bet that you're running some kind of software or service that is causing this problem.

Thanks but this didn't help. My problem isn't so much with servers but the workstations. Looking thru Technet says something about memory leaks but I'm still looking :-(

Sounds like a driver issue to me.

Are you using the latest copy of the drivers for the printers that you are using? Check the vendors web sites to make sure. It could also be a slight compatablity issue, you are using SP4 which was current in 1999, any new drivers would assume later service packs which could cause this behaviour on some machines.

Try upgrading workstations to SP6a. There were several printing spooler issues resolved with SP5 and SP6. As I remember, there is also a patch for printing issues available at MS site. I had similar problem once and the problem appeared only on SP4 machines. Machines with SP5, 6 and even SP3 were OK.
