Spooler Subsystem app

I have upgraded this pc from windows 98 to windows xp pro. after the upgrade Need it to add a printer. three quaters thru the installation I get an error msg “Spooler subsystem app has encoutered a problem and need to close” and “Operation could not be completed”.
I have research on microsoft but don’t have a fix
please help
