Hi,

In some networks with Win Server 2k3, I've been noticing an annoying problem: suddenly the OS reports printers connected to PC shares as Offline.

Further research and testing, showed that the spooler (specifically the PRINTES folder) gets filled with lots of files. Manually emptying this folder in both PCs (client and server) seems to solve the problem. But the folder starts to fill up again from the next print on.

It seems there is no relation between OS's. RAW/EMF make no difference either. AV software was configured to ignore the spooler folder and all subfolders. Permissions on PRINTER folders were granted to Everyone, Full Control.

Does any one has another idea?

Thanks

Assuming you are using the latest printer drivers, check the following Microsoft article http://support.microsoft.com/?id=216221 on the print spooler not clearing jobs.

If removing the read only perm doesn't work - try setting the service recovery to "run a program" if it goes offline and set it to a batch file.

You can set up this batch file to clear these files than restart the printer service. You can also set the 2nd failure to send you a message or some type of notification if that didn't work.

It's always best to solve a problem, but sometimes little things like this are thorns in your side when you're engaged in bigger projects and a workaround will keep it going without hassling you until you have time to deal with it.
