Spoolsv.exe shutdown

I recently updated a PIII 500 with a new install of Win2k (SP2)and upped it to 256MB and a 40GB HDD. Most of the Windows updates are installed, with the exception of the Security Rollup. The machine powered itself off yesterday in the middle of a print job.
When the user logged back on to Windows, spoolsv.exe immediately seized from 40-70% of CPU time. The machine will do this at each startup even there are no print jobs pending. I can go into Services and Stop/Restart the service, but how do I prevent the service from doing this in the first place?
