Spyware

By ichu50 ·
My PC is suddenly slowing down and I get a lot of pop up, almost each time I click on a link.

A few months ago I had the PC serviced and the the spyware was removed. How can I do it myself? How can I prevent this after cleaning?

Thanks in advance

You can download a program called spybot search and destroy or adaware by lavasoft. They are free. Just update them and then run them. Also you may wanna download a pop blocker just do a search using google or yahoo to download one.

To clean up spy-ware, start with AdAware

www.lavasoft.de

Then run Spybot Search and Destroy

www.safer-networking.org

If they do not clean off the spy-ware from your system, we need more information on the specific spy-ware you have.

To keep spy-ware off of your system, the first step is to be cautious about what web sites you visit, and what "free" software you install.

Desktop themes for 1 are getting bundled with a lot of spy-ware from the site hosting the file.

Any web site that opens a lot of pop-up windows is apt to also install spy-ware.

Switch from IE to either Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, or Netscape. All are more secure and less vulnerable than IE.

In IE, open Internet Options.
Click on the security tab.
Click on the Custom button.
Change ALL run and install settings to prompt.

Install a software firewall such as Zone Alarm

www.zonelabs.com

With Spybot, there is an option to have it run in the background, sort of like a virus scanner, to stop spy-ware from installing.

I have used almost every spyware removal tool out there because of a recent problem with a clients pc. I had some real pesky spyware and couldn't get it off but I found this Giant AntiSpyware it is only a 15 day trial but it works great finds tons of stuff that spybot ect doesn't find.

I would recommend an up to date version of a spyware scanner/removal tool. I find spybot search and destroy which is on downloads.com.

If you dont need it go into the services snap in via administrative tools and turn of the service messanger and disable it as this can be used to send annoying popus to your screen.

For long term pc care update your windows via the microsoft website and ensure you have the latest patches and service pack, maintain an up to date virus scanner avg is free. Use a firewall, a commercial one if you can afford it is better than the windows one. Hope this helps. :)

id have to say after testing adaware and other various spyware cleansers, i would recommend SpySweeper, it tackles those spyware programs that adaware doesnt, and it even puts up better protection wall against new spyware intrusions, it can be found here http://www.webroot.com/ and comes with a free 30 day trial, yes adware and others are good, but spysweeper also updates alot more than those others.

after cleaning with the above suggestions - i would recommend spywareblaster - it prevents more spyware from being loaded and winpatrol - i think thats the name of it - their both free and u shouldn't have anymore problems with spyware

Turn off system restore if it is used in your os.

Download, update, and run the following.

Your Antivirus Software.

If you don?t have a current antivirus You can get a copy of Computer Associates etrust EZArmor. It is a combination of Antivirus, Firewall, Desktop Security, and Popup Blocker. The first year is free. It is easy to use and great at it?s job.
