Spyware / Adware Getting Nowhere

By AndyMah ·
When I fired up IE6 today I started getting pop ups. It?s the same three or four nasty windows that keep coming back. I have tried AdSubtract, Ad-aware, Opt Out, etc. Ad-aware finds a Double Click cookie most of the time after I had the pop ups occur, but not all the time. I also tried RegCleaner and deleted a fair amount of junk.

All my MS Office updates are installed and I?m ?protected? by McAfee (OEM). It has caught Trojans in the past. I also went to Symantec?s site and gave their virus check a whirl. Nothing has helped.

One other observation: Every-so-often, Outlook Express would try to run. I have Outlook set as my default mail program.

My guess at this point is that I?m barking up the wrong tree. If anyone could offer some assistance as to what I?m overlooking I would appreciate it.

(WIN Me, Office 2000, IE6)

What you need is pop-up stopper, or a similar program.

Go to www.popupstopper.net

Also, check out www.samspade.org

Thanks for the input!
(I hope you all don't mind one reply comment for everyone.)
Today I attempted to uninstall IE6 and revert back to IE5.5. When I chose to uninstall 6 my whole system crashed. It took part of windows with it. I brought up the Task Manager and noting was running. Not even windows (Explorer). I'm back up and running now.
We live and learn. I think we're going with WIN 98 or 2000.

It sounds like you have a "default homepage" for IE6, and that page by default is trying to load pop-ups. Can you set IE6 to start up with a "blank page" (Tools --> Internet Options... --> Home Page --> Use Blank)? Does that help?

Then try to goto the site where your previous default homepage lived. Now you get pop-ups? (I'll bet: Yes.)

You can stop pop-ups with any of several little apps. Have a look at ZDNet and C|Net for such a tool.

As for OE starting up, it could be that from time to time, one (or more) of these pop-ups is trying to run a "mailto:" command (or something similar). Once you kill the da** pop-ups, this effect should go away.

If it's just those frickin' pop-ups you want to get rid of, I like KillAd. It's a small freeware program that works great. Goto:

It can be setup with a number of filters, though I haven't messed with them much.Hope that helps.

If the other answers haven't helped give the program available at this site a try.
It's called BHODemon
When I run it the only thing that shows up on my system is Adobe Acrobat.

I see that a number of others have given you some pretty good answers (somethat I wasn't aware of).

I've recently been trying the Opera browser (www.opera.com). It automatically blocks all those extra pop-up windows. Of course, like any new program, it intoduces some "challenges" of its own. Yet, you might want to poke around with it, even if you don't decide to deploy it.

humbly submitted,
diabetic
