Sql 2005, pull subscriptions

By kiroboy ·
I have an sql 2005 server in the office. I want to set up a hot spare in a building across town.

On the main sql server I have configured replication (transaction). How do I make the hot spare 'see' the main server in order to pull the updates?

I would like it to happen via ftp, and I have enabled that option on the main server.

Two approaches

The simple solution would be to define a firewall rule which opens the relevant ports on each end of the connection. HOWEVER, depending on what router/firewalls you have, this is not a very secure approach, since attackers can also attempt to connect over the same ports. This could work, but this is a risky approach.

The more secure solution would be to configure a site-to-site VPN between the two sites. This would allow the server databases to replicate over an encrpyted link, while preventing any attackers from gaining access to the servers.
