SQL 7.0 Fill Factor

By rsutton ·
We do almost 100% inserts into our db very little or no deletions from it. We are using the default Fill Factor of 90%. This db grows by just over a Gig a month. Does anyone see a problem with this? Should we lower the fill factor to improve index performance?

Don't worry about it!

The fill factor applies only during creation of the index. Once you're off and running, fill factor doesn't apply at all.

OTOH, with your heavy insertions, if you're re-creating indexes on a regular basis, you might wantto start with a fill factor of maybe 30-50. Bear in mind that this will cost you on reads--performance will be 30-50% of that for a fill factor of 100.
