SQL archive

By runnerk2 ·
I am new in the world of SQL. I am trying to figure out how I can archive my data without replacing it with new data, because each time I enter a new data and update it, it will replace the original data.
I am open to any sugestions either from JAVA or Visual Basic experts as well.

Thanks,

Reza

Not sure about your terms. Archive of data usually implies copying (or otherwise moving) data from the 'production' database, removing from the database. After removal it may be backed up to tape or a archive database. In cases, the archive db is'connected' to the producton via a view so that a single query will find all matching data in either (usually begin/end dates but other select will work).

It sounds like you are doing a record insert (create a new record) but are getting an update of an existing record first. Been a bit since I did SQL. There is a method that starts a record add, that positions to the end of the file and clears fields. Then you set fields to whatever values and do an update/add/whatever. Check you help for ADD, UPDATE, and other such. Check in a user guide under Adding a new record.
