SQL ODBC connection without a driver

By bgibilaro ·
I am doing development work for a company who runs their business off of a UNIX server with a program called KERMIT by Datatrac Incorporated.

We also have a shared hosting plan with SQL Server 2000 installed.

Datatrac offers an ODBC driver toallow us to extract information from the UNIX program into our SQL Server. However, since we are using a web host, we can not install a 3rd party ODBC driver on their server.

My question is, is there a way to make an ODBC connection without installing the driver on the web server?

I do realize that the best solution would be a dedicated hosting plan, however, the company I work for is not currently willing to spend that kind of money.

Any assistance that you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

SQL ODBC connection without a driver

by Joseph Moore In reply to SQL ODBC connection witho ...

No.

The ODBC driver is needed so whatever application (be it web server ASP script, or a client application, etc) will be able to formulate a query against a remote data source in a general way. The ODBC driver formats the data query request, sending it on the right TCP port, with the fields in the correct order, with the authentication presented just so.
Without the ODBC driver, you cannot make an ODBC request. It is like trying to speak French when you have never heard the French language. You could scream in English all you want, but the people who only speak French would not know what in the **** you are saying.

We decided to just upgrade to a dedicated hosting solution that will allow us to install the required ODBC drivers.

Thanks for your help!
