SQL Server Administrator Password

By Gelibathioki ·
I have inherited a windows 2000 small business server. No one knows the administrator password for the SQL server. The default user "sa" comes up but the null password does not work. The password for administrator on the windows 2000 server does not work either. Can anyone help?

I don't know if any of these will be of assistance to you but they may be worth a look

I tend to use a Live Linux to do things like this but it's not something that someone unfamiliar with Linux should be doing.

if the server is configured for both sql and windows authentication, you should be able to connect with the sql enterpise manager configured for windows authentication (not SQL authentication) IF you have the local admin password for the windows server.

if not, then hit it with a utility:

the problem is that the SQL SA password does NOT have to be the domain admin password or the local machine password [though SQL recommends using the local admin password to preclude conflicts. It can be whatever the admin specifies it to be.

Passware is the program I recommend. It works every time. Though pricy it's worth the $$.
