SQL Server changing domains

By Osmond.Louey ·
I have a task of migrating an SQL 2000 Server from one domain to another. Has anyone experienced any complications, or problems other than the passwords changing. ie data loss etc.

SQL Server changing domains

by Joseph Moore In reply to SQL Server changing domai ...

I've moved a SQL Server2K from being a member server in a NT4 domain to its own Workgroup and back again.
As for SQL Server handling the changes, it is fine. Since SQL Server has its own user database, it really doesn't care about the server's domain membership.
Now, if all of your databases use ONLY Windows Authentication for connections to the SQL Server user accounts, then there could be a problem, but not a hard one. All you would have to do is reconfigure the SQL Server accounts to pointto the new Windows users/groups.
As for any Standard Authentication SQL Server accounts, they won't be affected at all.

Basically, it is not difficult to do this at all. Just check the SQL Server accounts after you are done (in Enterprise Manager -> the group the SQL Server is in -> the SQL Server itself -> Security folder -> Logins)

hope this helps
