SQL Server Logon
We have a Win2K machine that is connected to a Web Hosting service via a VPN. For database maintenance we log on to the SQL server using SQL Server 7 client software over the VPN.
Following a problem with the Hive file, we needed to re-install most of the software including SQL Server client. We now find that the client on this machine is unable to register and log on to the SQL server.
The error message is:
Client unable to establish connection Connection Open(CreateFile())
It is not a problem of the procedure, as the same procedure works fine with other machines on the network, as well as a Win2K box at home, and it is not a problem of network connection, as we can connect to the server using telnet over the VPN from the offending machine, so all is OK at that level.
I feel that there is either a file that is missing that is preventing SQL Server client from logging on, or perhaps there is a file that is in existence, that is causing the same effect. But that is just a guess. My knowledge of SQL Server does not run deep enough here.
Has anyone got any knowledge of this situation and a possible remedy, short of a clean re-install (politically unsound at the moment!)?
I would really appreciate it if you could come up with a fix. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions that need answering.
Cheers,
Alan
