SQL Server Maintenance Plans Not Working

By wallywhiner ·
I have Windows 2000 / SQL Server 2000 with a separate maintenance plan for the system DBs, and two other DBs on the server. Only one of the maintenance plans appears to be working properly. All appear to be configured the same except for differentstarting times. What would cause one plan to work completely, backing up DB and trans logs, another plan to only back up the DB and the third plan to do nothing?

When several DBs exist on one server are they usually combined into one maintenanceplan or are should they have separate maintenance plans?

I am assuming the plans not working are failing. You can check the error logs in Enterprise Manager. Go into the Management, Database Maintainance Plans node, then right click on the plan and select Maintenance Plan History. There you can see exactly what steps are failing and why.

Yo can also check for errors under SQL Server Agent, Jobs. Right click on the Maintenance Job that is failed and select View Job History. Make sure and check the box Show Step Details.
Between these two logs you should be able to determine the problem.

In my experience you can choose to combine DBs into one maintenance plan or have separate plans, still should work. I usually combine the system DBs in one plan and have separate plans for the productionDBs.

Actually, the databases were set to a Simple recovery model. This caused the transaction log portion of the maintenance plans to fail since transaction logs aren't generated with a simple recovery plan. Once I change the recovery plans to Full, the transaction logs backup properly.
