Sr An Prg, What's Next?

By billyboys ·
I have six and a half years experience in IT. The companies I worked for include a small telco, a software vendor, 2 of the biggest internatinal logisctics companies (in the past 3 yrs). I am very strong in SQL Stored Procedures, Web Application Programming (ASP,ASP.Net,Perl, with XML). I have developed all sorts of web applications such as webmail, wapmail, online WMS, EDI, and a number of e-logistics applications. I am OK in VB and PowerBuilder.
I have started the current job about 4 months ago and position is Sr. Analyst Programmer. The best the current company could offer me is perhaps an System Analyst post within the next 12 months. And this is very little opportunity beyond the System Analyst position.
I am looking for career advancement, to become a Project Manager or IT Manager. I knokw I am much more knowledgeable (technically) than the System Analyst and the IT Manager in my current and past 2 companies.

Over the years I have seen a lot of weaknesses in my bosses(managers), they lacked technical skills, management skill, what is worst - people skills. They always seem to be making the wrong comment at the wrong time (ie: after ppl spents months completing a major project). They always seem to over-commit (to user requests) when they always tell you not to do so.

I am currently taking a MSc in IT Management and will graudate in 9 months' time. The reason I take the course is to broaden my knowledge especially in the management aspect, hoping that the knowledge I gained will enable be to a more rounded manager in the future.

1). Should I start looking for a new job now? as current workload is light thus enables me to study without stretching my brain power too much.
2). What posts are logical/ideal for me?
3). Should I stick with the Logistics field or should I try something different?

Would appreciate your advice.
