We are currently about to purchase four computers and one of my peers recommended using Star Office 7.0. The computers will be running Windows XP operating system. Can anyone provide me with any pros and cons about this product.

I submitted the url to staff and are currently assessing whether to move forward with the purchase. The article is very informative and provides a lot of insight about the product.

Pro, you will save a LOT of money versus Microsoft Office.

Con, Star Office is not as feature laden as MS Office.

You can give an older version a spin for free by downloading Open Office.

I install Open Office on most of the home systems I set up to save my clients money.

In a business environment, you may run into a few issues if you collaborate on a large number of documents with others who are running MS Office.

Thank you very much for your response. Because of your informative response, we are assessing whether or not this product will meet our needs. I am leaning more to not purchasing the product because of the last statement. I also feel that this will be a major challenge for us.

TheChas is right also Staroffice and OpenOffice.

I use OpenOffice on XP home and pro.
OpenOffice (StarOffice) is about 90 to 95 percent compatable with MS Office 97/2000/2002.
I use the speadsheet and wordprocesser the most in OpenOffice. It is a good product not to over look.
      Good Luck

This response validates what one of our technical staff stated which is good; however, I am still concern about how our customers who are using maybe an old version of Word and Excel would be able to read documents that we sent to him with this tool.
