Like a lot of companies, the one I work for is at a crossroads in regards to it’s future use of Microsoft products. Due to the impending changes in Microsoft’s software licensing policies, I’m currently investigating a migration from Office 97 to Sun’s StarOffice 5.2. My experience with the word processor module has been good and bad. Any new documents created from within StarWord are fine. But my attempts to convert existing Word 97 documents to StarWord have not been encouraging. Has anyone had similar experiences or am I missing something? Personally I believe Microsoft will drive customers to begin using Sun’s office product if for no other reason than to save money on licensing fees. Even with conversion problems it would seem that going with StarOffice will still be cheaper in the long run than re-licensing the 100 or so PCs we have here. What are your thoughts?
