Start Button Doesn't Work

By kimscomputing ·
I am working on a computer for a lady that recently upgraded (by herself) to Win98 from Win95. Everything appears fine but the Start Button will not work. I can left click and open it but it will not open on its own. When I open it I can't get tosettings, run or any of the win programs only the programs folder. I checked for viruses and it only had one - Dialer. I removed it, ran sfc and the button still doesn't work.

I'm sorry, but in fact, the only real solution is to re-install W98se. It seems that your virus has broken seriously your kernel.
Except if your left click button is damaged...

This is one of the problems from simply installing the upgrade as opposed to doing it right, and starting over from scratch.

I recommend that you back up any user files
inventory the installed applications,
Run fdisk /mbr and then re-partition the drive.
Format and start over.

This can be compounded if the user was an AOL user, as AOL takes over the PC.

Anybody who is still using win 95 has an old, obsolete OS that has significantly deteriorated already. Then you perform an upgrade (an extremely complex process fraught with a multitude of potential errors), and you have a good recipe for disaster. Throw in a virus infection on top of that, and it's not hard to see why there is a problem. Virtually everyone I know who has had an older system and performed an upgrade has had a nightmare experience. In the long run, it's MUCH better to just reformat the hard drive, and do a clean install of a full retail version of win 98se. You will be glad you did. If money is an issue, perhaps somebody can access www.ebay.com for her and get an unused copy of win 98se really cheap.
