Start Menu problems

When I go to Start/Programs/any program, the screen freezes up and the program will not run. I can use the mouse to go back to the Start button again. If I hunt for the .exe, I can run any program. How do I get the programs to run from the Start menu? This is on our NT server and I am logged on as Administrator.

This sounds like registry corruption. Normally, if the Start Menu has disappeared or behaves in the manner you have described, the registry has become corrupt. Hopefully, you have performed regular backups and are able to restore. Some admins keep separate registry backups. If you can restore your registry to a date prior to this happening, it may resolve the issue. One other thought, sometimes a newly installed program may have corrupted or simply over-written certain registry settings. If you can identify the most recent program installed prior to this first occuring, you may want to attempt removal of that program to see if Start Menu functionality returns. Does this happen when running anything from the Programs portion of the Start Menu or one particular program? If it is just one, perhaps removal and reinstallation of that application may resolve. One last thought, I've run into similar situations where using the mouse causes problems but keyboard shortcuts are successful. Look for any resource conflicts as well. Hope this helps!

Also you can verify from explorer if these shotcuts have correct path to .exe files. In properties of the shortcut you will see the path where the shortcut try to find exe file (you can try to recreate this shortcuts).
