Start up problem

Recently I re installed OS (XP) and since then on starting till booting and opening of the desktop menu,my comp behaves well but there after takes about 5 min before I can activate any icon or local area connection icon appears in sys tray. I need to wait for 5 min before working on comp.

start up

could be an application starting e.g. virus scanner updating or scanning etc.
try running Task Manager, see if you can spot the culprit

Startup programs

You should also run an msconfig to see what additional programs are launching at startup. If you have Windows Defender installed go to the Tools option and there you will see a more user friendly way of listing programs at startup, and remove them as necessary.

.... after a fresh install, upon start-up, Windows and everything else you've installed (anti-virus, adobe reader, java, etc...) will be contacting HOME to see if there are any updates and will continue to do this until the entire system has been brought up to date. This all takes TIME when you've first started your computer.
