Start up problems

By hoogland ·

I am having a problem with a computer. When I turn it on and start in Normal mode, the XP logo shows and the screen goes black. You can see the mouse only. When I boot into safe mode, you can see safe mode in all 4 corners, the build number and the mouse, but nothing else.

Is there a way of getting the desktop to appear. Any suggestions would of help.

Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, then select Task Manager and click New Task and enter Explorer.exe to force desktop to appear.

try Last known good configuration ....
if that doesn't work then you could try a repair of XP ..
i had a client who had a similar problem after she did a system restore which locked up.That ended up in a Format Reinstall.

Ran into this, repair installation should work if you have an XP disk (your version). Seems the problem was caused by a virus or worm (so many on the PC at least 11). Repairing the installation was not an option, wonderful no software PC.

So new installation and immediately downloading anti-virus/Spybot/Adaware, got it to booting again.

Still wondering why Norton did not catch these trojans or worms, it was up-to-date. Only answer is 1 very bad web site !
