you have to be a little more specific and provide more details. What Windows version [if your running Windows]. What exactly do you see on the screen [if anything] and in what order. At what point does the computer stop and what is on the screen when it does stop [providing you have a screen]. What steps have you taken prior to this problem developing, in other words what did you do? Was it working [poorly or not] prior to you trying to fix it?

prior to pressing the reset button what is on the screen? if it's a blue screen critical error stop there should be an error code. What is the error code.

no error code just when she turns on the tower nothing comes up but a bslack screen that says no signal and a bunch of processes that i think for the monitor drivers.

Ok, as the second answer says a "no signal" when you first boot up isn't necessarily a problem. The monitor doesn't detect a signal from the computer until the BIOS initializes. From there you will get either a slash screen with a company logo or the CMOS/BIOS information which gives BIOS date, processor type and speed, harddrives etc. Basically a VR [visual representation]of the BIOS initialization string. Once that is complete there is a BIOS to O/S handoff which is one of the areas typically where boot failures occur. The computer will stop there and provide a message such as invaild boot disk, Missing NTDL, Non system disk or disk error. If this is the case we need to know. Also a memory dump will have a stop code performing memdump in the upper left corner of the Critical Stop blue screen.

the o/s does nothing until the reset button is pushed then it will start.

What does this mean O/S does nothing. Do you get to the desktop? Windows loading screen? Windows Splash screen?

Well you could try taking the cmos battery out which will reset your BIOS to factory defaults but depending upon what processor your running, what mainboard you have, graphics card etc you may have to go in and set it up for those components.

What computer mfg? Dell? Gateway? IBM? HP?

also when she receives this error message she hits the eset button on the tower and the o/s (win xp home) starts normally after dumping physical memory to drive

i did nothing to the computer itself, all i did was remove the hijacking program "newdotnet" from her computer using hijackthis and adaware and spybot.

The 'no signal' message is normal. It is coming from the monitor, not from the computer. It simply means that the video card is not sending a signal to the monitor. This is not a problem as long as the monitor displays something from the OS eventually. Most computers will display this message for about two seconds.
