Start-up Random Problem - Drive Window

By mlbrown ·
Sometimes when my P.C starts it opens a window showing the contents of either the C drive or the C & D drive. There appears to be no discernable pattern as to when this happens, and sometimes it starts quite happily without opening either window.

Start-up Random Problem - Drive Window

by Gary McP In reply to Start-up Random Problem - ...

Generally speaking, windows will open up whatever window was open when you last shut down. Do you have windows open when you hit start shutdown?

Alternately, you might have a shortcut or application in the startup folder that's opening these windows. Check your startup folder for apps or shortcuts you don't want or need.

As a last resort, or worst case scenario, you may have a virus or adware installed. Make sure you're running a virus scanner with the latest definition files, and try runnning AdAware -it's free and you can download it here http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=adaware&tg=dl-2001 (remove any spaces from the URL).

Hope this helps,
Gary

I usually close down all applications before shutting down.
I have very little in my strartup folder, and I don't change it, and the problem is intermittent.
I regularly run spyware checks, and have updated virus definitions, and virus check throws up nothing

Are you the Only User on the Machine or are you using a Locally Stored or Roaming Profile?
This Sometimes Occurs When Windows is Shut down with a Window Open.
Alternately Check any Software you are Using which Creates or Uses Macros (Dragon Naturally Speaking, MS Office etc.)
Also Check your Task Manager to See if there are Any Rogue Programs Running, This Could be the Result of a Pest (But Unlikely).

I'm the only user - I shut down all windows (apart from sometimes forgetting My Vital Agent)- I do use Microsoft Office, - are you saying this may be the source?
I don't think I have any programs running that shouldn't be (ALT CTRL DEL bringsup the programs I want to run)
