Starting from scratch ... What would you choose?

By zeta ·
If you were to start from scratch knowing what you know now about website design, would you choose a PC or a MAC, and what would be the "must have" applications (would you use Frontpage, Dreamweaver, etc and what graphics programs are the best).

my choice

by H-man In reply to Starting from scratch ... ...

I can't speak for MAC as I haven't used on for many years, however today's PC's seem to handle graphics very well.
As for applications I would go for dreamweaver and photoshop. This is only my personal preferance but I have found both to be user friendly and powerfull, and there is a lot of free info extras for both on the web.

my package

by dbunny84 In reply to Starting from scratch ... ...

I have never used a Mac for any serious work, so i cannot comment on how good it would be. Personally, I use a very powerful Medion PC, but event a 466MHz model is fine. With the software, i use notepad (because it is so flexible for writing anything from HTML to JavaScript, PHP and Perl), Paint for creating computer graphics (because it is a no nonsense, very powerful piece of software) and Microsoft Photo Editor for scanning and editing images.
This package is great because it doesn't actually cost a penny, but you do have to be willing to put time into learning the appropriate languages.
If WYSIWYG editors are to be used, i find the HTML Document feature of Ability Office (also free) very good, as it covers a wide range of features.

i would choose PC as well, because i never used MAC professionally and i don't think that the PC has any problem with handling the graphics anymore.
And Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Macromedia HomeSite, Notepad would be my choices for application

I would go with the pc as well. MAC might have some programs that are only available to mac however, you can still get great programs for pc (macromedia MX suite and adobe).

I don't like frontpage

by kris_vansteenwegen In reply to Starting from scratch ... ...

Frontpage has a few disadvantages. First of all, my experience is that the generated code is not always bug-free. Secondly, these Frontpage extensions have to be supported by your browser: bad thing. Third, Frontpage includes and leaves a lot of garbage in your files. I prefer clean files without all the obsolete code in between.

So, I dropped it and I am now doing my development in CSS, XHTML 1.1 and Javascript with ACEHtml (The freeware version). Nothing more than an enhanced editor, but does code checking. I don't need more.

I don't know about dreamweaver, but I hear from everywhere it is cool and the best.
