Starting out as a consultant

by clinton goveas . Updated 24 years, 1 month ago

Being a consultant is no easy matter and starting out as one is “tough” to say the least. So whats the best way to begin consulting? Once you have the setup, how do you begin your projects?

My logic is to research other local consultant businesses in your line of work, find complementary services you can provide (i.e. ONLY you can provide), and then approach them with a partnership proposal.

If they find it favorable, this not only opens up their client-base to your services, but also paves the way for future joint projects with them. At the same time, partner with multiple consultants to reduce your dependence on one or two consultant’s small client bases.

I suggest this because at start-up I believe references from known consultants could be one of the best ways of getting business. Am I right in following this plan of action? Is there a better way? Let me know …
