    Starting over

    Locked

Hi I am new to your forum and to most this is going to be a stupid question. This all started when I had problems with my sound card. To make a long story short I tried to reinstall windows using the repair option an a gateway recover disk, the problem is that I have a Dell. Now when it fired up I don’t have all the drivers or they are just not compatible with the Dell. I went to the device manager and there a the question marks besides the video and ethernet. Since I have totaly messed up with the install I will just have to make it back to stock a clean install. I have an xp disk but it still comes back the same way. So how can I get it to format and have it back to a clean install………thanks…….two-dogs

re: Starting Over – You need drivers.

You will need the manufacturer’s drivers CD which usually comes with the computer. If you can’t find that, you will need to go to the manufacturer’s web site and see if you can download all of the drivers for the components installed in that particular make/model.

If you can’t locate drivers at http://www.dell.com then you will have to identify each and every component (motherboard, processor, sound, video, etc…) and visit THAT manufacturer’s web site where you should be able to download the drivers individually.

By the way, using the XP CD from another manufacturer MAY be illegal if you didn’t put back on the exact same version of XP that came with the machine, the one for which it is licensed. For example, if the DELL came with XP Home and you’ve put on XP Pro, the installation key you used to get it installed can not be in use on any other computer.
