Starting windows 98

My computer was working fine. Today I tried to start, and my problems started. As the machine starts the boot process all seems well until it goes to Windows, when the monitor switches off. The boot process continues, but I cannot do anything from ablank screen. To add to my woes, the emergency startup does nothing to help. When I get to the “Safe Mode” all I have is a blank screen with the word “safe mode” in each corner and nothing else. On investigating a bit further I find a message Systemcan’t find Explorer.

Can someone please help?
