Tave a look here for troubleshooting assistance:

Delete any spaces in the URL.

I'm assuming you're using Win98 SE. If not, this link has another link for 98 First Ed troubleshooting.

Good Luck!

if your pc is on a network and you have mapped drives. go to my computer and disconnect the mapped drives and then see if pc powers off. secondly. if you have network printers configured and they no longer exist that go to a printer and select its properties and select delete port. a list of all virtual port including lpt1 will be displayed. delete all old ports no longer in use. It won't let you delete a port that is currently being used by the printer you just selected to access the properties/ ports so your safe in that respect. as for monitor not turning on at boot remember to check your cpu fan. loosing monitor at boot is the first sign that the cpu needs to be reseated. though I don't think this is the symtom you are experiencing.

Re-install you W98-OS, you might have a corrupted operating system. But before you do that make sure you back-up your files for safekeeping.
Goodluck.
