Hi, startup and shutdown issues are extremely common with windows 98. On microsoft’s website, look at knowledge base article Q188867. Article title is, “Windows 98 startup problems.” They offer a number of possibilties ranging from checks throughsafe mode to startup options. Best of luck.

Quite often boot up problems with the screen freezing are related to drivers having problems loading. Check the drivers for whatever hardware was recently installed on the system (possibly the mouse driver) and update the drivers with the latest from the hardware vendors site.

I ran into the same problems once. I press a key or move the mouse and it goes through.
Extracted Cab47 + cab48 file from the win98 CD in the c:\windows\system and c:\widows\system32 directory. If your using a Logitech mouse, extract cab49 file to c:\windows\system\vmm32 also.

Are you on a network? Press escape when the windows screen is up to see where the PC has stopped loading. It could be your NIC card failing to initialize. SMC had some 10/100 cards out that had bad chip sets that would cause it not to be able to auto negotiate. If this fits your scenario, try changing the network card from auto negotiate to 10 mbps and see if it helps. SMC 9432 chip set 83C170 had this problem although I also found it on the 83C171 cards too.

Well. have you hit esc key at the splash screen to see if it is hanging on any errors. Also are you using a sound blaster sound card,( they will hang the 98 splash screen without the SB patch installed. Also , try re-installing your mouse drivers.

Try mapping a network drive to the share, and also select “Reconnect at logon”.

      This may help…

first of all boot it in safe mode and then say
      start
      run “msconfig”
      choose advanced in there and
tick on “Force compatibility mode disk access”
      “disable fast shutdowns”
      reboot the machine and check
if it hangs again then change the settings back to normal and then reinstall windows
      hope this will help

You did not say if the machine completely freezes(i.e., the logo color band stops cycling). If the machine is taking what seems like forever to boot up check the Networking Properties’ installed protocols. There is instance that will cause the machine to appear to freeze for a minute, but this not the case. It is “searching the network”. If you have a network card installed, TCP/IP is bound to it, there is no IP address designated, DHCP is selected, and there is no DHCP server, the machine willping the network card at bootup looking for a DHCP Server to get an IP address. Since one does not exist, it will look around for a while searching like a lost soul. Then it will finally give up and bootup. The way to correct this situation is to enter a fictious IP address in the properties section of TCP/IP–>(whatever network card). Or if you’re not using TCP/IP on you network, just remove the TCP/IP entry for the network card in Network Properties. From then on, it will bootup happy with its fictious IP address
