    StartUp Mystery Window

    Locked

    by wpbarnes ·

After uninstalling an app and removing all vestiges of it from the Registry, now, after the initial CTL+ALT+DEL at startup, I get a large window with no title and no text or graphics, just an “OK” button. When I click the OK button, it disappears and I get the normal logon dialog. Where did this come from and how do I get rid of it?

      Look in the following places:

      Start Menu, start-up
Registry – Search on runonce, check the run keys around each runonce key

      System legacy files:
      boot.ini
      system.ini
      win.ini
      msdos.sys
      autoexec.bat
      config.sys

You are looking for references to either programs related to the one you removed, or any “unusual” programs.

      Check the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and remove any hints of that program.

Thanks but in my original description I mentioned that I removed ‘all vestiges of the application’ including those in the Run Key that were found on the search.

Sounds like there is a space in the LegalNoticeText or LegalNoticeCaption portion of the Registry.
Open Regedit and go to either

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system

      or

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Check both locations for LegalNoticeCaption and LegalNoticeText. Make sure there is nothing in these values. I bet there is a space in one of them. Just delete whatever is there, then reboot. That should take care of it.

      hope this helps
