Startup Problem XP

After I downloaded a Windows XP update on my new HP Notebook Windows won't Boot up. I get the XP Screen only. turn it off and On I can get setup,diagnostics, and boot from Lan prompt. Sytem recovery disks wont even boot. Looking for ways to recover data or start the buger Up. No real support from HP/Microsoft. Need Help Fast

Boot to the Safe mode (Hit F8 key after the initial screen) and do the Sytem Restore.
If you cannot boot to the Safe Mode, you still can do the System Restore as long as you can boot to the Command Mode. Please let me know by posting further information.

ive never seen a set of HP restore disks that didnt work. did you restart the computer with the restore disks already in the drive?? is boot from CDROM enabled before Hard drive in BIOS?
