staying connected

By bulldoggy_27 ·
I just wiped HD and reinstalled XP along with sp1 and other updates. I have a dsl modem straight to pc. After initial startup i can be actively online for about 5-10 minutes tops, then it seems to stop. I release and then renew the IP and then Im active for another 5 minutes or so. Modem is in a clean area (nothing around it). A) why do I keep losing my connection? B) What can I do to stop it ?

Hi
Most, if not all, DSL providers require a username and password for connection to the modem. This is not a one time login for the DSL modem will continue to ask for logins, at predefined time intervals, even if you are already connected. The easiest way around the persistant requests for you to login is with a router. ( It is ALWAYS best practice to be behind a firewall when using highspeed connections ) The router can also be configured to login to the dsl modem with your own predefined time intervals for doing so. 10 minute intervals usually will suffice. If not, set it to 5 minute intervals for logins. You can do this when you set the router for the PPoE connection your dsl modem requires.

I hope this helps you.
