Step by Step Wake On LAN

For "wake-on-LAN" both the motherboard, and the NIC must support WOL.

1. Start by connecting the cable from the LAN card to the WOL socket on the motherboard.
2. In BIOS settings, Power Management, Enable the WOL option.
3. You should now beable to "wake up" the computer by attempting to access it from the LAN.

As to remote shutdown, I recommend that you leave the romote PC on all the time, and set a short time limit to go into standby.
This will make the wake-up time much shorted then a full shutdown, and avoid any boot problems.
(I'm not sure that all, or any, systems will WOL from the "off" state.)

Hi,

Just to add to TheChas' comments... Assuming they aren't rarely used servers, if you implement WOL, then you will almost certainly see PCs firing up and not being able to effectively stay off.

Anytime a mail message comes in and the popup reminder happens for starters.

Something to bear in mind when you implement this...

Cheers,
Tim.
